Ok, so I know I am not the world's most regular blogger... And it's not like I have a huge following and fans waiting for an update, but I do need to blog to stay sane, and for the last WEEK blogger has been giving me issues. First the server was down for 2 days, then I could not log out of my one account into another (I manage 5 blogs, for myself and clients)...
And, as life would have it, it has been a jam packed week full of things I wanted to write and blog and post about...
So here we go, what did I do in the last week...
We started (and finished) filming the pilot lookbook for Lembrancas Vintage clothing shop. The idea is to pitch similar lookbook videos to local brands and designers, and as a pilot / portfolio piece we got all our friends and contact lists together and shot for 16 hours (to make a 3min video!)
Watch this space for the final product, coming soon!
On Saturday afternoon I took a trip to Kalk Bay with the girls, we shopped for vintage finds, ate ice cream in the cold and had a glass of wine (Paradyskloof Cab Sauv Merlot - keep it in the family) at Polana.
These lil birdies loved the sweet water at the China Shop (a whole HOUSE filled in every hook and corner with china. cups, plates, pots, saucers... china for Africa...)
On Sunday we woke up to a misty grey city and I decided that it called for pancakes. By the time we got to the late afternoon pancake mission it was clear skies with only a slight remembrance of the morning's grey weather in the chill in the air. But I baked non the less.
Flapjacks, banana flapjacks, nutella flapjacks... you name it, I baked it. Good Sunday!
On Monday (after a few meetings and a bit of thrifting) I spent the afternoon sowing with sussie. I have the machine but I am absolutely USELESS with it, so sussie does the sowing and I do "assistant seamstress" jobs (like making tea, cutting off sleeves and taking out stiches that went off the beaten trail...) We are making alterations to items that will be on sale at the Treasure hunting is fun sale at Beleza on 26 May 2011~
Yesterday I voted, I did it for Cape Town...
and afterwards went to a studio in Newlands to style a very cool shoot with photographer Amy Scott and Roxy Joubert from Grace Models. Here are some behind the scenes images, the real ones (which I am super excited to see) will follow sooooon!
And there you have it... Another week gone by...
I also sold my canvas at the Street Exhibition and saw some cool artworks there, but that deserves a whole new post...
Believe it or not, our parents were cool way before us... In fact, so cool that you probably wear their old clothes now... and they don't understand the fashion...!?!?!
...working hard - been bunked down behind the PC all week, I see no humans until after 5 most days.
...getting older this month - 10 days till my 26th birthday. I am getting that anxious feeling where I start questioning everything in my life. Is this where I wanted to be when I was 26? and then I found a school portrait of me aged about 7 or 8 yesterday and I just stared into my little eyes, trying to remember what it felt like...
...making plans - planning a lookbook video shoot, a Swartland Revolution Roadtrip, some ideas I want to pitch to magazines, my sister's wedding and lots more. Looking ahead you easily forget about NOW, and next thing you know, well
it's Thursday again, so I will try remember what inspired me this week...
1. Lanvin for H&M Promo 2011
Love it love it love it. We are going to start doing something similar for local brands so watch this space.
But the production, the georgeous dresses, the colours, the setting - everything about this video is inspiring! Look! enjoy!
2. Vogele Shoes advertising
A merge between illustration and photography work. Clever!
3. My Grandma
86 years old, she still lives on her own, does her own shopping, carries it up to her 2nd floor apartment, prepares her own meals and does more for her community than most 30 year olds I know.
Last time I visited her she was busy knitting and making 100s of little dolls (all with custom outfits) for traumatised kids. These dolls, small enough so they can be held in one hand and fit in a child's pocket are distributed to kids who's parents get arrested, or who gets taken into foster care.
When I go home next week I want to go spend some time with this amazing woman (I hate seeing her alone - my Grandpa passed away in Jan 2009 and after 60 years of marriage it is hard for her on her own) and get her to teach me to knit and sew!
4. Ideas Magazine
Been looking through their website all week and absolutely love the easy DIY tips and trends. I have a few things I might want to share with them...
5. The boyfriend
Herm has been doing illustrations all week and tonight we will go paint the walls at Octane Gallery (well he will paint, I will take Indian food and red wine and sit there and watch him...). Octane opens on Saturday night and Herm will be doing a live painting on the night.
and that is it for this week. I did page through a few awesome copies of Frankie / Elle Decor and British Vogue as well but nothing to show here so this will have to suffice.
I want to start a new feature here, even if it is just for myself, of weekly inspirations... I have a folder on my pc called "inspiration is everywhere" and in there are folders from as far back as 2007... but what good is inspiration if it is filed away somewhere?
so here is the first, "what inspired me this week" post...
1. finding the work of Vivian Maider. I have blogged about this so I won't go on about it. read the post here.
2. Steve Meisel - fashion photographer / genius. I had a meeting with European (still not sure where he is from) photographer Graham Mitchell yesterday who showed me Meisel's State-of-Emergency series, and I absolutely love it.
Click through for the rest of the images, well worth it.
From his quirky silly illustrations that popped up randomly during the presentation to the super cool completely-out-of-the-box ad campaigns (including "outfits" made for everyday things on the streets of Cape Town to raise awareness for prop house Mardi Gras / Sharks protesting in the harbour against shark attacks and numerous kiff YDE campaigns) his ideas opened my mind to so many new and fresh possibilities. He was also responsible for the completely random signs (for Horse Meat / Witch / Pardons / secret clubs etc) that popped up all over Cape Town earlier this year.
"Candy Chang is a public installation artist, designer, urban planner, and co-founder of Civic Center who likes to make cities more comfortable for people."
Her "Before-I-Die" and "I-wish-this-was-a..." campaigns has me all fired up to start doing my own inspirational street art.
Assisted Shelly on a shoot for Media 24's Tuis / Home Magazine yesterday, and she is a really great stylist. We transformed a garage (where guys were grinding doors in the one corner) into two different beautiful living spaces in a few hours, all with props crammed into her car... One day I will get jobs like that:)
8. The return of my dear friend Megan. What started as a forced friendship (we were the only two Cape Town girls on training in Joburg together when we started to work for The Platinum Group years ago) has developed into an amazing bond. I love this girl - few people can give me such to the point advice - and having her back in town after almost two years in Knysna is a blessing!
ok, 8 is an odd number, but I am going to leave it there for now since inspiration shouldn't be forced...
Oh, and HAPPY BIRTHDAY to my-one-and-only-amazing-super-awesome-love-him-to-death brother! all of 23 today. He is the calmest, coolest person I know and I have never met anyone who does not like him! love you boeta!!! xxx
A recent visit to my little sister (ok she isn't technically my sister, but her brother is my brother from another mother and she's the same age as my - real - brother and I've never had a younger sister and she never had a sister so just go with it ok... hehe) found her in the basement at their house in Obs making t-shirts and all sorts of cool things...
A sneak peak at some of the awesome designs she has planned for her men's range Mr November...
2. For Elle Fashion Director Chris Viljoen I helped start up an Afrikaans Fashion blog called Die Rok as well as a Facebook Fan Page, if fashion is your thing, take a look - even if you dont understand Afrikaans (use Google Chrome as a browser and they will translate everything for you!)
Also in the pipeline is a new blog for creative genius and boyfriend The Blaksmith... and my favourite tattoo artist and good friend Rico Swanepoel, WATCH THIS SPACE, coming sooooon!
