things I do when I should be working...

Melktert for breakfast - got a doggy bag at dinner last night and although then I thought I would never eat again, this was even BETTER this morning. Made by Jacques Erasmus of Hemelhuijs fame, it's the best melktert I've ever had (and that's saying a lot, I am Afrikaans...)

Veggies with humus for lunch - in an attempt to feel better about having melktert for breakfast...

took a 2nd attempt at newspaper nails... fairly successful... getting better.

captured dying Aaron's lilies (or like my friend Megan calls them - "flowers of death bru, Afrikaans people always have them at funerals...")

captured chaos... amazed my OCD has allowed this to remain on the table for so long... and the dead flowers are still there! (I say as I pat myself on the back...)

did this, in an attempt to convince myself to believe in myself...

Friday

Friday consisted of:
sleeping late (for the first time all week I got up without seeing the 05:.. on the clock.) Got up at 9am!
invoicing clients (pay me!!!)
doing all the work I didn't get to all week - including the exciting post about the Wine we will be tasting at this year's Swartland Revolution.
Some grocery shopping and muffin baking and making "the best broccoli ever" to have with the steaks H and I had for dinner.
Getting excited to play Bingo only to realise I should have booked weeks ago.
Spending the night at home getting a bit creative and handy... made some things for the City Bowl Market where I had a vintage stall...

Street. An Exhibition

So when I finished my canvas for the Street Exhibition I decided that I didn't really want to sell it, but I should try... so I priced it at R300 (which I think is a lot for a small 15x15 cm amateur artwork) but then SOMEONE BOUGHT IT...

I received a mail yesterday that someone had bought my artwork and the R300 would be paid to me by Saturday... I was amazed and a little flattered (although sad that I would not be able to bring it home, to the street it belongs on...)

So today after brunch at Newport Deli in Granger Bay Megan and I went to go look at the exhibition. I must say I expected there to be MORE art, but what I saw really impressed me.

Here are a few highlights:

1. Harrington Street by Anthony Lee Martin (I have a dream that one day...)

I liked this since it reminded me of the Candy Chang "Before I die..." project I blogged about a few months ago. Martin went around town with blackboard signs where people could publicly proclaim their dreams. He made it into books and made big prints of some with cards that visitors could fill in and add to the installation.

2. Pepper Street by Cyrelda Victor
A cartoon style collection of the sights of Pepper Street.

3. Myrtle Street by Jac Hamman
I know Jac, and I know how many carguards compete for your R2 on Myrtle Street, and I like his style!

4. Burnside Road by Keri Muller
I like what she did, and I like Burnside Road (it's where Beleza is!)

Here are some views of my own canvas. SOLD!

Street is on show till tomorrow night at 22.00.

A week without blogger...

Ok, so I know I am not the world's most regular blogger... And it's not like I have a huge following and fans waiting for an update, but I do need to blog to stay sane, and for the last WEEK blogger has been giving me issues. First the server was down for 2 days, then I could not log out of my one account into another (I manage 5 blogs, for myself and clients)...

And, as life would have it, it has been a jam packed week full of things I wanted to write and blog and post about...

So here we go, what did I do in the last week...

We started (and finished) filming the pilot lookbook for Lembrancas Vintage clothing shop. The idea is to pitch similar lookbook videos to local brands and designers, and as a pilot / portfolio piece we got all our friends and contact lists together and shot for 16 hours (to make a 3min video!)

Watch this space for the final product, coming soon!

On Saturday afternoon I took a trip to Kalk Bay with the girls, we shopped for vintage finds, ate ice cream in the cold and had a glass of wine (Paradyskloof Cab Sauv Merlot - keep it in the family) at Polana.

These lil birdies loved the sweet water at the China Shop (a whole HOUSE filled in every hook and corner with china. cups, plates, pots, saucers... china for Africa...)

On Sunday we woke up to a misty grey city and I decided that it called for pancakes. By the time we got to the late afternoon pancake mission it was clear skies with only a slight remembrance of the morning's grey weather in the chill in the air. But I baked non the less.

Flapjacks, banana flapjacks, nutella flapjacks... you name it, I baked it. Good Sunday!

On Monday (after a few meetings and a bit of thrifting) I spent the afternoon sowing with sussie. I have the machine but I am absolutely USELESS with it, so sussie does the sowing and I do "assistant seamstress" jobs (like making tea, cutting off sleeves and taking out stiches that went off the beaten trail...) We are making alterations to items that will be on sale at the Treasure hunting is fun sale at Beleza on 26 May 2011~

Yesterday I voted, I did it for Cape Town...

and afterwards went to a studio in Newlands to style a very cool shoot with photographer Amy Scott and Roxy Joubert from Grace Models. Here are some behind the scenes images, the real ones (which I am super excited to see) will follow sooooon!

And there you have it... Another week gone by...
I also sold my canvas at the Street Exhibition and saw some cool artworks there, but that deserves a whole new post...

Street art

Some call it graffiti - the name for images or lettering scratched, scrawled, painted or marked in any manner on property (read: vandalism). In most countries and cities it is illegal but sometimes it is also the most important form of art in a city. I have blogged about local Cape Town graffiti before, but this time I want to show some of my favourite pieces as found on the www.

I find this to be more than vandalism, artist like the ever illusive Banksy and our own local Faith47 and American based Candy Chang - to name only three of the big names - are making inspirational street art that delivers social commentary and new insight into situations and circumstances in the cities we live in.

Here are some of my favourites:
Banksy:
Faith47:

Candy Chang:

and some others:

Art? Vandalism? Social commentary? You decide... that is what it is all about in the end, art in public spaces, where the public can decide...
