Street art

Some call it graffiti - the name for images or lettering scratched, scrawled, painted or marked in any manner on property (read: vandalism). In most countries and cities it is illegal but sometimes it is also the most important form of art in a city. I have blogged about local Cape Town graffiti before, but this time I want to show some of my favourite pieces as found on the www.

I find this to be more than vandalism, artist like the ever illusive Banksy and our own local Faith47 and American based Candy Chang - to name only three of the big names - are making inspirational street art that delivers social commentary and new insight into situations and circumstances in the cities we live in.

Here are some of my favourites:
Banksy:
Faith47:

Candy Chang:

and some others:

Art? Vandalism? Social commentary? You decide... that is what it is all about in the end, art in public spaces, where the public can decide...
